Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) and eight other House Republicans on Wednesday moved to counteract President Obama's campaign to raise taxes on the rich by offering legislation that would make it easier for wealthy taxpayers to donate as much of their money to the government as they wish.Scalise introduced the "Buffett Rule Act," H.R. 3099, which would require the IRS to create a new line on people's tax forms to let rich taxpayers pay extra to help pay down the debt.
And why does Scalise think that this is a good idea?
"If Warren Buffet truly feels that he's not paying enough in taxes, he doesn't need a change in law to put his money where his mouth is, he can send his check for a larger amount to the treasury today," Scalise said.
On the off-chance that Scalise is too stupid to understand what's wrong with his idea, the whole point of the Buffett Rule is that super-wealthy people shouldn't have the option of paying a lower tax rate than average Americans. The whole point of taxes is that everybody has to pay them. They are compulsory, not voluntary. If people paid them voluntarily, then we wouldn't need the IRS or withholding.
The reality is that Scalise probably understands all this, but thought it would be hilarious to rub everybody's nose in the fact that the Romney Rule?the idea that millionaires like Mitt Romney should pay a lower tax rate than maids and janitors and even doctors and lawyers?is the law of the land and will remain the law of the land as long as Republicans get their way. Well, Steve, nobody's laughing.
