Huawei Ascend G 300 hands-on at MWC 2012 (video)

Huawei's all about the D Quad at this year's Mobile World Congress, but that's not everything in the manufacturer's arsenal. Having seen the first devices from its D (Diamond) and P (Platinum) series, we've been wondering how the third-tier G (Gold) handsets would turn out. Huawei's booth holds the answer to our lingering question in the form of the Ascend G 300, a predictably lower- to mid-range smartphone packing a 1GHz single-core CPU, 4-inch WVGA display, 5MP rear camera along with other modest specs.

While it's clear that Huawei's major focus is on bumping up its specs and becoming a major player in relevance and performance, we've only seen that strategy reflected on its top two tiers. The G 300, in contrast, doesn't feel any different in build quality than its older budget-conscious cousins; it employs the company's signature gray / white (or gray / black) look on the back. The edges and sides of the device are slightly different, varying by its color: the versions in black are soft-touch plastic, while its white counterpart is completely smooth, much like the rest of the phone. The battery cover felt rather flimsy, and one unit on hand looked as though it were coming apart, the cracks far too distanced for our comfort. The OS on hand is Android 2.3, accompanied with the usual MWC promise of being "upgradeable to ICS," and uses the same homegrown skin we saw a couple months ago on the Huawei Honor.

Of course, this one will likely hit at a low price point, so don't be tempted to compare this particular handset with some of the vendor's more premier options. It's not going to be as polished, but it's not meant to be. So while the 10.5mm-thick device will be perfectly reasonable for many, power users won't be waiting in line for this one to come out at a yet to be determined time. Still curious? Keep scanning your eyes below to find the gallery and movie.

Dana Wollman contributed to this hands-on.

ZTE 910 hands-on at MWC 2012

ZTE's LTE FDD, CDMA, EVDO-enabled N910 -- we've also seen it referred to as the N91 -- also popped up at Mobile World Congress, so we gave it a quick once over. The spec sheet isn't bursting with this set but it does pack an 800 x 480 display, 5 megapixel autofocus camera, a 1080p capable front-facing lens, WiFi, Bluetooth, and of course its running Android 4. The N910 is a pretty thick handset as its posterior is a rounded affair, though, it feels hollow, and is impossibly light. Unfortunately for us -- and you -- it refused to power on during our brief visit, even after 10 minutes or so of charging. We will swing back around and see if we can't capture a bit of video, but until then the following gallery will have to do.

The HTC One X Hands-On: The Most Exciting Android Phone to Date [Android]

HTC's new flagship phone is an absolute monster. Quad-core 1.5GHz Tegra 3 processor, 4.7" 720p Super LCD2, 8MP f2.0 camera with its own image processor. I got to spend a little time with this thing, and it's the most excited I've been about a phone in a long time. More »

Uber-Geeky Wedding Proposal: In Binary, Wearing a Bender Mask

Ah, geeks. They're always trying to out-do each other by proposing in silly ways, filming said marriage proposals, and then posting them on YouTube in hopes of getting Internet-famous.

This is perhaps the geekiest marriage proposal yet. This dude didn't just propose like a normal geek--with Internet memes, or to a video game character--no, he went all out. YouTube user doctorpappa made a video of himself wearing a Futurama Bender mask (for those of you in the dark, Bender is an animated robot) and speaking in binary.

Er?yes. Speaking in binary. He rattles off a series of 0's and 1's over the course of three minutes and presumably expects his true love to decipher the code. And she did, of course--but it took her about a half hour to do so.

"My boyfriend told me I had to close my laptop for a couple minutes, then when I logged back on this was posted to my facebook wall." The lovely geeky lady to whom doctorpappa was proposing told Geekologie. "He sat across the room as I transcribed and then decoded it. After about a half hour I found out it says, 'Rachel, you are awesome. Will you marry me?' I said yes, of course :B"

To make it even geekier, as Gizmodo points out, there's a flying remote-controlled shark balloon in the background. Geekiness is all over this house.

So congrats to the happy geek couple, or should we say, "01000011 01101111 01101110 01100111 01110010 01100001 01110100 01110011 00100001."
