Even the best patching programs probably miss this

We like to think our data center configuration and patch management practices are pretty businesslike and solid, right? Well, in at least one very important aspect, almost all of us are essentially asleep at the wheel, folks.

Sure, most data centers have honed their patch management over the years. Most actually do a pretty good job at getting operating system and application server patches deployed in a timely manner. The majority even have an emergency process for getting critical patches installed even faster than the normal process.

BroadSoft To Deliver UC Platform For Service Providers

BMW reveals first DTM livery

BMW has unveiled the first of the liveries it will run during its DTM campaign this year. One of the six M3 DTMs will run in the green and blue colours of its backer Castrol EDGE, rather than the traditional BMW corporate livery of the past 20 years. DTM champion Martin Tomczyk and long-time Mercedes driver Bruno Spengler have joined BMW for the coming season to partner long-time factory drivers Andy Priaulx, Augusto Farfus, Joey Hand and Dirk Muller, all of whom are switching over from GT racing.

Switched On: You tell me it's the institution

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

Apple rose to dominate sales of digital music by more or less mirroring the way consumers acquired music in the physical world -- that is, purchasing songs, but providing a greater degree of granularity. This worked well for music and has also held true for apps and best-selling books, but hasn't been as in step with consumer media acquisition habits for other content.

For example, before Apple brought sales of video material to iTunes, most consumers did not generally own TV shows except for perhaps a few cherished series on DVD. They either watched them as they aired as part of a cable-like subscription or paid a flat monthly fee for the privilege of recording them on a DVR to be viewed after they aired. Furthermore, both Blockbuster physical stores and later Netflix's DVD by mail feature relied on a system of one-time consumption via rental or subscription that eschewed ownership of movies. And today, Vevo.com offers free streaming of many music videos that Apple still seeks to sell.

Rick Santorum gets under Mitt Romney's skin

There's no question that Newt Gingrich flamed out and lost to Mitt Romney in the debate last night ... but it's not like Romney dominated all of his opponents. For example, when Rick Santorum brought up Romneycare, he kicked Mitt Romney's ass with it?and as you can see in these reaction shots from CNN's split screen HD feed, it really pissed Mitt off.

Mitt Romney
So I guess it turns out that even Mitt Romneybot sometimes has trouble hiding his emotions. And really who can blame him? The last thing anybody wants is Santorum under their skin.

Banshee music player now works in Windows, supports Amazon MP3 downloads

A few moments ago, version 2 of the Banshee music player for Linux was released, bringing with it a whole slew of new features, and the addition of an official -- but alpha-quality -- Windows build. The Mac OS X build of version 2 is due later today.

The most notable new feature is support for the Amazon MP3 store -- you can buy and download music from within Banshee -- but unfortunately it's only available in the Linux build at the moment (OS X and Windows support are planned, however). There have also been some significant improvements to artist, album, and queue interactions -- and yes, you can finally right click a track, album or artist and select 'play after' to insert it into the queue.

Beyond actual playback, the user interface has been tidied up -- it now looks a whole lot smarter -- and the Ubuntu One Music Store and SoundMenu extensions have been made official. For a complete list of changes, additions and bug fixes, check the change log.

When Windows support initially appeared in February, we found it rough around the edges and fraught with stability issues. With version 2, Banshee for Windows is still a bit unstable, but it's shaping up to be a good alternative to Winamp, iTunes, or whatever other music library manager you use. It's almost as attractive as its GNOMEish brother, too!
